Test area and data

The data mining–data integration–3D modeling concept is tested in a test area in northern Finland. The test area is located north of Sodankylä covering c. 2900 km2 of municipalities of Kittilä and Sodankylä. Geologically the area is located in the central part of Paleoproterozoic Central Lapland greenstone belt (CLGB). The test area is highly prospective and host a number of known base metals and gold deposits and occurrences. The most significant of these are the Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE deposit, Sakatti Cu-Ni-PGE deposit and Pahtavaara Au deposit. The test area is one of the most actively explored areas within Finland. Currently about 10 different companies ranging from major mining companies to junior exploration companies have active exploration licenses or reservations in the area.

The data used in test work consist of GTK’s high resolution low altitude airborne geophysics (magnetic, EM, radiometric), ground gravity survey, and regional till geochemistry, HIRE and XSodex reflection seismic data, and audiomagnetotelluric (AMT) data along the XSodex seismic profiles. In addition, the data on total of 1700 diamond drill holes and c. 8600 bedrock observations in the test area is used to support the work.
