Project Excursion to Karelian Isthmus in the Leningrad region and South-East Finland 3. - 7.9.2012

The excursion of the project group was carried out to get acquainted to the stone buildings and resources of the project area. The excursion consisted of architectural themes, quarries as well as natural resources of the project area. One important theme was the use of left-over stone in construction.

Historical Pyterlahti quarry site in the municipality of Virolahti (Finland) where it was extracted the stone column for the statue of the Emperor Alexander I, built between 1830 – 1834.
The height of the stone column is over 25 m and the statue is placed in the Palace Square in St. Petersburg.
